GSPay is built on UPI 123PAY, a platform created by NPCI to support UPI payments on feature phones. PhonePe plans to customise and expand the GSPay technology and launch its own UPI app for feature phones in the coming quarters.
The app will support key UPI services such as peer-to-peer transfers, offline QR payments, and receiving funds via mobile numbers or self-generated QR codes.
PhonePe’s goal is to make UPI fully interoperable between feature phones and smartphones. The initiative is expected to support greater financial inclusion by targeting crores of Indians who still use basic mobile phones.
Sameer Nigam, Co-Founder and CEO of PhonePe, said, “We are excited to bring UPI payments to India’s extensive feature phone user base. This segment has been underserved, and we aim to integrate them into the digital payments ecosystem.”
Industry estimates suggest India had around 24 crore feature phone users in 2024. Another 15 crore feature phone shipments are expected over the next five years, offering a large user base for digital expansion.
PhonePe currently serves over 60 crore users and supports payments at more than 4 crore merchants across India.
