Chhaya Kadam, who became a household name after her powerful role in Kiran Rao’s critically praised film ‘Laapataa Ladies’, is now facing serious legal heat. The popular actress has reportedly landed in trouble for allegedly tasting meat from protected wild animals – an offence that could have legal consequences.
The Maharashtra Forest Department has summoned her after a Mumbai-based NGO raised the alarm over her claims, sparking a formal inquiry into possible wildlife violations.
Forest Department has launched an official investigation
According to a report by Free Press Journal (FPJ), the Plant and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) filed a complaint with the Thane Chief Conservator of Forests and the Divisional Forest Officer. The complaint was based on statements allegedly made by Chhaya Kadam about eating meat from wild animals. As per the NGO, Kadam had claimed to have tasted meat from mouse deer, rabbits, wild boar, monitor lizard and porcupine – all of which are protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Following the complaint, the Forest Department has launched an official investigation.
Special team on the case
A dedicated team has been formed to dig deeper into the claims. The team will also be looking for the poachers who may have helped source the meat and those who might have been involved in any way.
Speaking to FPJ, Rakesh Bhoir, the investigating officer, shared an update on the case. He said, “We got in touch with Kadam over the phone, where she informed us that she is out of town for a professional trip and will return only after four days. She has informed her that she is seeking legal advice and appearing before us for the investigation.”
Bhoir added that the authorities are working on tracing the people who hunted or supplied the meat. “Strict action would be taken against the ‘culprits’,” he confirmed.
