“Reducing carbon emissions is a top priority for us, both in our products and in our operations,” said Maruti Suzuki India MD & CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said.

Maruti Suzuki India announced on Thursday that it dispatched a record 5.18 lakh vehicles via Indian Railways in FY25, marking its highest-ever achievement and contributing to a cumulative total of 24 lakh vehicles dispatched since FY15.

The carmaker aims to reduce carbon emissions and increase the share of rail dispatches to 35 per cent by FY31. It utilises Indian Railways to dispatch vehicles to over 20 hubs, serving more than 600 cities across India.

The company also uses rail to serve the port locations of Mundra and Pipavav for exports.

“Reducing carbon emissions is a top priority for us, both in our products and in our operations,” said Maruti Suzuki India MD & CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said.

Maruti Suzuki obtained an automobile-freight-train-operator license in 2013, becoming the first company in India to do so.

The company operates over 40 flexi deck rakes, each capable of carrying approximately 300 vehicles per trip. Maruti Suzuki stated that this initiative has helped avoid over 1.8 lakh tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) emission.

The company also claims to have saved more than 630 lakh (63 million) litres of fuel through this initiative.
