Around 10 protesters put themselves in chains at Campus Gates of Columbia University in New York on Monday afternoon, immigration and customs enforcement agency to put themselves in chains at Campus Gates at Columbia University. They were part of a large contingent who were sitting outside the gate.
This protest followed Mohsin Mahdavi’s last week’s detention, completing a graduate study in philosophy at the School of General Studies in Columbia. Mr. Mahdavi was taken into custody of snow during his natural appointment in Vermont.
Federal Immigration Officers detained Mahmud Khalil, a graduate of the School of International and Public Affairs last month. Both were the organizers of Palestinian performances in Colombia.
The protesters on Monday called for immediate release of Mr. Mahdvi and Mr. Khalil. He read while reading, “Free all our political prisoners” and chant, “We want justice, how much? How? Now free Mohsain Mahdvi!” He also read Mr. Khalil’s writing from the Detention Center at Jena, La, where he is being held.
A Colombia spokesperson said on Monday that the university was “monitoring an interruption” and its public safety officials had cut the locks of about 10 protesters.
“We will follow all applicable policies and procedures to address possible violations,” said Columbia spokesman. “This small disruption has not interrupted our students normally to participate in classrooms; all scheduled campus activities have moved forward according to the scheme.”
The New York Police Department on Monday evening said that unspecified number of people were taken into custody and were being processed. It was not clear what allegations they would face. Police said one of the people who were detained were trying to pitch the tent.
This was the second protest this month in which the protesters connected themselves to the gates of Columbia.
