What is the scam?
Victims receive a pre-recorded voicemail, often in Hindi or English, claiming to be from the RBI or a government authority. The message typically says:
“Your bank account will be blocked due to credit card fraud. Press 1 to speak to an RBI officer.”
Once the user responds, scammers posing as officials ask for sensitive information—like card numbers, CVV, OTPs, or Aadhaar details—under the pretext of resolving the issue.
In some cases, users are directed to click on links or install apps, which give fraudsters remote access to their devices.
Why is it dangerous?
Scammers sound official and use fear tactics to push people into quick decisions.
Fraudsters can empty bank accounts or misuse credit details once they obtain sensitive data.
The calls often spoof official-looking caller IDs to appear genuine.
How to protect yourself?
Never share OTPs, card details, or Aadhaar numbers over phone calls or messages.
Ignore calls or messages claiming to be from RBI asking for personal information. RBI never contacts individuals for such details.
Do not click on unknown links or install apps based on a caller’s advice.
If you suspect a fraud attempt, report it to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930.
How to verify government communications?
PIB urges people to report suspicious government-related messages to its Fact Check service.
