Minnesotans may soon need a new nickname for their beloved arena — because “The X” is getting a rebrand.
On Tuesday, the Minnesota Wild revealed that their decades-long naming rights agreement with Xcel Energy will officially end this summer. While Xcel Energy won’t hold the arena’s name anymore, the company isn’t going far — they’ve signed a brand-new multi-year partnership with the team that focuses on expanding their impact across the community.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the 25-year journey we’ve shared with Xcel Energy,” said Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold. “They’ve supported us from day one, and we’re excited to continue working together on meaningful community programs in this next chapter.”
Though the name on the building will change, Xcel Energy will still play a major role behind the scenes. As part of the renewed partnership, they’re rolling out a new initiative called Community Power Play, teaming up with the Wild’s Community Relations and Hockey Partnerships team to make hockey more accessible for Minnesota families.
The program will offer grants to youth and high school hockey groups, helping cover costs for things like equipment, ice time, and rink upgrades — all aimed at supporting young players and growing the game at the grassroots level.
“When we first partnered with the Wild 25 years ago, both of our brands were just getting started,” said Xcel Energy CEO Bob Frenzel. “Today, we’re proud to be deeply woven into Minnesota’s identity. This new phase will allow even more kids across the state to experience the game we all love.”
Even after the name comes down from the building, Xcel Energy’s presence will remain strong inside the arena and across the team’s digital platforms.
The Wild say a new arena naming rights partner will be announced ahead of the 2025–26 NHL season — so fans, get ready for a new name, new memories, and a fresh era of hockey in Minnesota.
