Hollywood fundraiser George Clooney, known for supporting Democrats, advised Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 US presidential election. In a critical opinion piece in the New York Times, Clooney, who recently co-hosted a high-profile event to raise funds for Biden, stated that the 81-year-old was no longer the same individual who was elected to the White House in 2020.
Clooney commented on Biden’s lackluster showing in the recent debate with Trump, expressing disappointment and noting that the Biden he saw at a fundraiser three weeks prior was not the same Biden from 2010.
Clooney wrote in the New York Times that he wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020.
Biden’s unsteady showing during the June 27 debate has heightened worries about his age and health, as he struggled with certain responses and made multiple mistakes.
The poor debate performance was dismissed by the US President as simply a “bad episode”.
“Did he feel exhausted?” Affirmative. Are you feeling under the weather with a cold? Perhaps. However, our political leaders must refrain from claiming that 51 million individuals did not witness the same as we did,” Clooney added.
Clooney expressed affection for Biden, but cautioned that the Democrats would not only lose the presidential election but also any grip on Congress if he became the nominee.
“According to Clooney, this is not just his personal view; it is also the shared sentiment of all the senators, Congress members, and governors he has privately spoken to,” stated Clooney.
The famous actor mentioned that the President has succeeded in numerous challenges throughout his career, “but the one challenge he cannot overcome is the battle against time”.
Clooney suggested that the party select a different candidate at the August convention while also pointing out the challenges involved, stating that “The proceedings may be chaotic but will energize voters in the party’s favor”.
Biden has consistently declined to withdraw from his campaign for re-election and challenged his opponents to confront him at the upcoming national convention in Chicago.
