The Mumbai event occurred shortly after viral footage depicted a chaotic interview scene with job seekers jostling each other in Ankleshwar, Gujarat.
The city of Mumbai:
A recruitment event by Air India for airport loaders caused a stampede at Mumbai airport yesterday. Over 25,000 candidates showed up for a chance at the 600 job openings, causing Air India employees to have difficulty handling the large crowd.
Images displayed the candidates pushing each other in their eagerness to get to the registration desks. Reports indicated that the candidates had to endure long hours of waiting without access to food and water, leading to a number of them beginning to feel unwell.
Airport loaders are responsible for loading and unloading luggage onto planes, as well as operating baggage belts and ramp tractors. At least five loaders are required for each aircraft to manage baggage, freight, and provisions.
Airport loaders’ monthly pay typically falls between ₹ 20,000 and ₹ 25,000, though the majority earn more than ₹ 30,000 due to overtime benefits. Basic educational requirements are necessary for the position, however, physical strength is also a must for the candidate.
One of the candidates is Prathameshwar from Buldhana district, who has journeyed more than 400 km for the interview. I am here to submit my application for the position of a handyman. “He stated that they are proposing a wage of ₹ 22,500.” Prathameshwar is currently in their second year of studying for a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree. When asked if he would drop out of school if he got the job, he responded with, “What should we do?” There is a high level of unemployment. I strongly recommend that the government generate additional job openings.
Another candidate with a Bachelor’s degree admitted to having limited knowledge about the handyman job but expressed a need for the position. Another contender journeyed from Alwar, Rajasthan to Mumbai. Despite holding an MCom degree, he has still applied for a job with only a basic education requirement.
I am also getting ready for government job exams. I heard that the pay is decent. “So I have arrived.”
The Mumbai occurrence happened shortly after a video went viral, depicting numerous job seekers jostling each other during a walk-in interview in Ankleshwar, Bharuch district in Gujarat.
Around 1,800 candidates attended the job recruitment event for 10 positions at a private company. The influx of jobseekers was so intense that the railing on the ramp to the office entrance gave way under their weight. Luckily, the ramp was not excessively tall, and none of the candidates who fell after the railing gave way sustained major injuries.
Seizing on the video, the Congress claimed it revealed the BJP’s Gujarat model and accused the ruling party of implementing this model of joblessness nationwide.
The incident was blamed on the private firm by the BJP MP of the area, Mansukh Vasava. They were only filling 10 positions and should have clearly outlined the requirements instead of conducting an open interview. The incident, to some extent, was caused by the company. It concerns us and measures are being implemented to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The video from the Mumbai airport has also led Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad to address the problem of unemployment and criticize the BJP.
