However, a source within the ICC who is knowledgeable about the situation stated that one of the key topics of interest among ICC members is the moment that Jay Shah assumes control of the global organization.
During the four-day ICC Annual Conference in Colombo, all attention will be focused on BCCI secretary Jay Shah, where important talks may happen regarding his succession as chairman of the global body from Greg Barclay. The ICC conference, commencing with a board meeting on Friday, is anticipated to be focused on the global body’s losses exceeding USD 20 million from hosting T20 World Cup games in the USA.
The financial details of the event are not included in the nine-point agenda of the AGM available to PTI. However, the board will discuss them as a “post-event report” as part of their standard operating procedure.
Discussion on ICC memberships, report from associate member’s meeting, and presentation of ICC Development Awards are on the agenda, in addition to the appointment of ICC’s new external auditor.
Another key issue, India’s decision not to visit Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, is not included in the ICC Board’s official schedule unless the chair allows it to be discussed as part of the “Any Other Business” section.
A source within the ICC revealed that everyone at the organization is eagerly awaiting Shah’s appointment as the new head of the world body.
The focus is not on the method, but rather the timing, as he will serve as BCCI secretary for one more year before his cooling off period in the Indian board begins in 2025 as per the constitution. “If he is required to step in by 2025, Barclays will be unable to finish his third two-year term from December 2024 to December 2026,” a source from the ICC stated.
Some people believe that the ICC’s chairmanship term should be altered from three terms of two years to two terms of three years, keeping the total term at six years.
Many people think that if Barclay’s term is extended to three years, Shah can finish his six-year tenure as BCCI secretary and then become ICC chairman in 2025 for three years while he is in the cooling off period from BCCI. After 2028, he has the opportunity to return and assume the role of board president.
