Suryakumar Yadav has been chosen to captain India in the upcoming T20I series in Sri Lanka, winning the competition against Hardik Pandya.

The BCCI appointed Suryakumar Yadav as the captain of the Indian team for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, finally putting an end to the speculation over whether he or Hardik Pandya would take the position following Rohit Sharma’s retirement. There is no official confirmation yet on whether Suryakumar has been appointed as India’s permanent captain in the T20 format. Nevertheless, despite Hardik Pandya being part of the squad, the selection of the World No.1 ranked T20I batter over him for the position suggests that he is being considered as Rohit’s replacement.
The response from fans on social media regarding the news has been varied, with a lot of people believing that Pandya earned the position. Nonetheless, this hasn’t led to any animosity towards Suryakumar, who expressed gratitude towards fans for the affection he has received recently in his initial remarks as the appointed captain.
“Thank you very much for the abundant love, support, and well wishes you have shown.” The past couple of weeks have felt like a dream and I am extremely thankful. Representing my country is an indescribable feeling that holds a special place in my heart. This new position comes with a high level of accountability, thrill, and eagerness. I’m looking forward to continue receiving your support and blessings. “Suryakumar mentioned in his Instagram post with a photo of him holding the team’s victorious 2024 T20 World Cup jersey that all glory goes to God, who is magnificent.”
Shubman Gill chosen as the deputy for Suryakumar.
Suryakumar had previously led the T20I team in their home series against Australia and away series against South Africa at the end of last year. Pandya, who served as India’s vice-captain in the T20 World Cup, was said to no longer be considered due to worries about his injury woes. Pandya captained the team in T20Is throughout most of 2023, but Suryakumar was appointed skipper for the series because Pandya was unable to play due to an unexpected injury suffered during the 2023 World Cup.
Shubman Gill was appointed as the vice-captain for the Indian team in T20Is and ODIs during the Sri Lanka series. Under Gill’s leadership, India’s second-string team dominated Zimbabwe, winning 4 out of 5 matches in the series. Sanju Samson, known for his power-hitting abilities, has been included in the white-ball squad for the Sri Lanka tour as Gill’s deputy in the Zimbabwe series.
