NASA warns two significant asteroids, (2024 LY2) and (2024 NH), will safely pass by Earth on July 23, 2024, at distances of 2,850,000 miles and 3,130,000 miles respectively. Read below for more details.

NASA Asteroids Alert July 23, 2024

NASA Asteroids Alert July 23: Two significant asteroids are set to pass by Earth on Tuesday July 23, 2024, at relatively close distances. These celestial bodies, known as (2024 LY2) and (2024 NH), are classified as building-size and airplane-size asteroids, respectively.

Building-Size Asteroid (2024 LY2)
– Approximate Size: 290 feet (88 meters)
– Closest Earth Approach: 2,850,000 miles (4,587,454 kilometers)

Asteroid (2024 LY2), comparable in size to a large building, is approximately 290 feet in diameter. It will make its closest approach to Earth at a distance of 2,850,000 miles, roughly 12 times the average distance between Earth and the Moon. Although this may seem far, it is considered a close pass in astronomical terms. Scientists have been tracking (2024 LY2) closely to ensure it poses no threat to our planet.

Airplane-Size Asteroid (2024 NH)
– Approximate Size: 92 feet (28 meters)- Closest Earth Approach: 3,130,000 miles (5,038,865 kilometers)

The second asteroid, (2024 NH), is about the size of a commercial airplane, measuring around 92 feet in diameter. It will come slightly farther from Earth than (2024 LY2), with a closest approach of 3,130,000 miles. Despite its smaller size, the proximity of (2024 NH) is still of interest to scientists and provides an excellent opportunity for observation and study.

No Threat to Earth

Both asteroids are being monitored by NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), which has confirmed that neither (2024 LY2) nor (2024 NH) pose any risk of collision with Earth. These close approaches allow astronomers to gather valuable data on the asteroids’ orbits, compositions, and physical characteristics without any danger to our planet.
