Olympics 2024, India Day 2 Recap: Manu Bhaker created history to clinch bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event, India’s first medal of the Paris games. Meanwhile, Ramita Jindal and Arjun Babuta also reached the finals of their respective rifle events.

India at Paris Olympics 2024 Day 2 Recap: After the heartbreak in Tokyo, Manu Bhaker created history to become the first ever Indian woman to win a shooting medal in the history of the Olympic Games as she clinched bronze in women’s 10m air pistol. Manu had scored 580 points to finish third in the qualifications. And after consistent shooting in the final, she finished third again, missing out on 2nd place and silver by the smallest of margins.
Elsewhere, there was good and bad news in the 10m air rifle women’s qualification as Ramita Jindal qualified for final but Elavenil Valarivan missed out after a heartbreaking penultimate shot. In the men’s air rifle qualification, Arjun Babuta qualified for final too, to bring more cheer. Arjun and Ramita will be in action in the final on Monday.
Late in the night, tennis contention came to a close as Rohan Bopanna-Sriram Balaji lost in straight sets.
In archery, the Indian women’s team simply didn’t going as they lost 0-6 in the quarterfinals against Netherlands and missed out on the chance to fight for a medal.
Our senior reporter Mihir Vasavda is in Paris to cover the Olympics. Please click here to watch the Paris Games drama unfold through Mihir’s eyes and words.
In badminton, PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy kickstarted her group-stage campaigns with straight-games wins. Two-time World Champion Nikhat Zareen has been has been handed a tough draw but she started off with a come-from-behind win against Germany’s Maxi Carina Kloetzer. Tougher tests await but the Indian got off to a good start. There was heartbreak for Sumit Nagal in tennis and Achanta Sharath Kamal in table tennis as they lost close matches. Harmeet Desai also lost to end India’s men’s singles contention. But paddlers Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula registered good wins to progress.
In rowing, Balraj Panwar finished 2nd in his repechage heat to enter the main quarterfinals, which will take place on Tuesday.

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Tennis MD R1, Bopanna-Balaji 5-7 2-5 Monfils-Edouard
India are at least forcing the French to serve this match out, and not going out without a fight. But Vasselin too holds serve easily. Now the Indians have to hold serve to keep this match alive. Remember, it is still one break down only.
02:28 (IST)29 Jul 2024
India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Tennis MD R1, Bopanna-Balaji 5-7 1-4 Monfils-Edouard
Monfils serve has been rock-solid as you’d expect from a singles player of his class (he double faults as I say that, at 40-15 nevertheless). And it is yet another hold for him, with a brilliant serve down the middle.

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Tennis MD R1, Bopanna-Balaji 5-7 1-3 Monfils-Edouard

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Tennis MD R1, Bopanna-Balaji 5-7 1-1 Monfils-Edouard

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Tennis MD R1, Bopanna-Balaji 5-7 Monfils-Edouard
Court 14 erupts as Bopanna nets a backhand valley. The Frenchmen take the first set! Bopanna will rue the mistake but Balaji also couldn’t get enough first serves in that game.
An enthralling set of tennis comes to an end but unfortunately for the Indians, they are up against it now.

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Tennis MD R1, Bopanna-Balaji 5-6 Monfils-Edouard
SENSATIONAL RALLY. That is breathtaking doubles tennis from all four on the court, Bopanna came up with a couple of clever angles but the French duo take the point in the end. Two set points for France.

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Tennis MD R1, Bopanna-Balaji 5-6 Monfils-Edouard

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Tennis MD R1, Bopanna-Balaji 5-6 Monfils-Edouard
The arena is once more bouncing, what an atmosphere on an outside court this late in the night. Vasselin with a good hold of serve and Balaji’s serve will need to hold. He has been really solid so far.
01:59 (IST)29 Jul 2024
India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Tennis MD R1, Bopanna-Balaji 5-5 Monfils-Edouard
What a rally at 30-30 in the 10th game! Once again the French are trying to keep Bopanna pinned at the baseline after his serve but the veteran comes up with a fighting exchange to eventually win the point. And a big come on as he puts away an overhead winner to hold serve. It was 15-30 there and Bopanna came up with a crucial hold.

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Tennis MD R1, Bopanna-Balaji 4-4 Monfils-Edouard
A 30-30 situation on on Sriram Balaji’s serve. Pressure. And he drops an ace out wide. And he holds too. That is pretty darn good tennis under pressure, again a good first serve and this time Bopanna puts it away at the net.
01:49 (IST)29 Jul 2024
India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Tennis MD R1, Bopanna-Balaji 3-4 Monfils-Edouard
Another break point opportunity forced by the Indians, but this time they take it! Balaji with a superb net interception to set up the break point in the first place. We are back on serve in quick time.
01:46 (IST)29 Jul 2024
India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Tennis MD R1, Bopanna-Balaji 2-4 Monfils-Edouard
BOPANNA BROKEN: Rohan Bopanna’s weapon is his serve but Monfils and Vasselin play a superb return game from the baseline mostly, constantly keeping Bopanna pinned at back before breaking his serve at love. From facing a break point themselves, they have been broken now. The crowd is getting more and more into this.
01:42 (IST)29 Jul 2024
India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Tennis MD R1, Bopanna-Balaji 2-2 Monfils-Edouard
A deuce situation forced by some good net game by the Indians. They do have a break point but that is saved. And eventually Vasselin holds serve. Bopanna engages in a long exchange with Monfils but the Indians couldn’t close out the rally.
Meanwhile, look who is in attendance here. Former India coach Rahul Dravid is watching on with the Indian camp.

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Tennis MD R1, Bopanna-Balaji 1-2 Monfils-Edouard
Sriram Balaji, the World No. 62 and the third-highest-ranked Indian doubles tennis player, arrived in Paris uncertain if he was playing the French Open at all. Typically fickle Parisian weather meant there were enough withdrawals by singles players in the doubles category for Balaji, alongside Mexican partner Miguel Reyes-Varela, to make it into the main draw. He would leave the French capital with three solid Grand Slam matches under his belt — his best-ever finish at a Major — and more importantly, ensuring his return ticket to Paris next month.

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: BOPANNA-BALAJI TIME FINALLY!
First things first, a brief background to this match (Via PTI): The flamboyant Gael Monfils will partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the men’s doubles opener against India’s Rohan Bopanna and N Sriram Balaji with Fabien Reboul pulling out of the contest due to an injury, here Saturday. The last-minute entry of Monfils may have a bearing on the match with Bopanna all set and prepared to take on the combo of Reboul and Roger-Vasselin. World number 30 Monfils had reached the third round at Wimbledon, losing to Grigor Dimitrov. On the way to round 3, the 37-year-old stylish shot-maker had scalped Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka. The first-round match between India and France has been delayed due to rain that has been lashing the city since Friday evening.

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: UPDATE FROM BWF
Guatemalan men’s singles player Kevin Cordon has withdrawn from the Olympic Games Paris 2024 badminton competition due to a left elbow injury. His remaining Group L matches against Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie (Court 2, 2pm local time, 29 July 2024) and Julien Carraggi of Belgium (Court 3, ‘Not Before’ 9.20am local time, 31 July 2024) will not be played. Matches on these courts in each respective session have been rescheduled. As per BWF General Competition Regulations for group stage play, the results of all matches played, or yet to be played, involving Cordon in Group L are now considered deleted.
That line has some significance for India as Cordon is in the same group as Lakshya Sen, who he already lost against. But this announcement means that this group now effectively becomes a three-man group (like others) and Lakshya’s match against Kevin doesn’t matter.

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Badminton MS, Group K, Prannoy 21-18 21-12 Roth
HS PRANNOY PREVAILS: HS Prannoy was pushed a bit in the opening game but bounces back to close it out in straight games. Crucially, the movements looked sharp, his defense was working fine, and the backhand was solid. With a match to come against a Vietnamese opponent, HSP has done his bit to efficiently top the group. Then the hard work begins.
20:54 (IST)28 Jul 2024
India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Badminton MS, Group K, Prannoy 21-18 18-12 Roth
All through the qualification period and even since way back in Thomas Cup, Prannoy had grown reputation of being a slow starter. Or a sedate starter, who takes his time to read conditions and opponent. But he’s hit the ground running at Paris, with very little time spent in finding his lengths. At 32, fewer the three-set matches for Prannoy the better. Like Kashyap has been saying, he’s not at all circumspect going for lines. 21-18, 18-12 up. Making Roth blink in long rallies.

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Badminton MS, Group K, Prannoy 21-18 11-6 Roth
Another interesting bit from Kashyap on air as he said, “The German, the way he’s playing it’s clear he’s just come to give a good fight and not exactly try and win points.. Prannoy saw that quickly and has started to engage him in rallies.” A five-point lead at the mid-game interval.

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Badminton MS, Group K, Prannoy 21-18 8-6 Roth
Another lovely tidbit from Kashyap on air also about Prannoy watching Taufik Hidayat over and over and over as a kid growing up, to hone that backhand of his. HSP’s backhand is one of the best in the business now.

India at Paris 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Badminton MS, Group K, Prannoy 21-18 6-3 Roth
A good start to the second game for Prannoy, despite moving to the supposed tough side where some big names have dropped games today. An absolutely lovely touch at the net that Gopi sir would’ve been proud to see, completely outsteps Roth there.
20:37 (IST)28 Jul 2024
Paris Olympics 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Badminton MS, Group K, Prannoy 21-18 Roth
Where Fabian Roth has succeeded is in alternating flanks and sending Prannoy left and right. The German is tall but he prolongs rallies invariably on the back of picking really low shuttles endlessly. But it was expected that Prannoy would up the pace and accelerate mid rally as soon as the 17-point hovered. Prannoy takes the first 21-18 with aggression on the net.

Paris Olympics 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Badminton MS, Group K, Prannoy 21-18 Roth
Fabian Roth gave Prannoy a good fight post interval, Prannoy had to dig deep quite a bit, but found his rhythm again in time to take the opening game 21-18. Paris Olympics 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Badminton MS, Group K, Prannoy 19-17 Roth
HS Prannoy has settled back into a good rhythm. Longer rallies, Prannoy is doing well to draw Roth front and then pushing him back with good distances on his lifts. Another good whipped forehand smash for 19-17.

Paris Olympics 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Badminton MS, Group K, Prannoy 16-16 Roth
A few more fist punches and roars from Prannoy as he starts to close the gap down. A superb rally at 15-16, HSP with some brilliant backhand defensive work, uses the sideways drift to good use and then draws the error in the end. Back on level terms!
20:26 (IST)28 Jul 2024
Paris Olympics 2024 Day 2 Live Updates: Badminton MS, Group K, Prannoy 11-14 Roth
The expansive cross-court smash. That’s Prannoy’s confidence shot. At 6-5. The court conditions should suit the Indian on his defense. He’s not particularly wary of playing cross shots to break the fast parallel exchanges. But he’s keeping pace. German Fabian Roth plays steady and the danger is if he can consistently push Prannoy to the back. But the Indian’s front court movement has looked sharper than usual. Prannoy 11-10 ahead in opener but now trails 11-14.

Olympics 2024 India Day 2 Live Updates: Manu Bhaker’s mother tells The Indian Express’ Nitin Sharma
“I was just writing my thoughts when Manu was competing. Our thoughts have always been to make her independent and that’s what Gita also teaches us. And we are glad she could achieve her dream of winning an Olympic dream. When she returned from Tokyo, she told us “Mumma, aur kitni mehnat karenge? At that time, I told her another verse from Gita, “Karma?y-ev?dhik?ras te m? phale?hu kad?chan, m? karma-phala-hetur bh?r m? te sa?go ’stvakarma?i.” it means one has a right to perform one’s prescribed duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your action. Never consider yourself to be the cause of results of your activities, nor be attached to inaction,” shared Sumedha Bhaker, who is a masters degree holder in Sanskrit.

Grindr disables location services in Olympic Village, chimes in Amit Kamath with another update.
Popular gay dating app Grindr has disabled its location-based features like “Explore” and “Roam” within the Olympic Village. The app said that this moves was being made to ensure that “LGBTQ+ athletes could connect with each other authentically without worrying about prying eyes or unwanted attention.”
“At the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, we made the decision to disable location-based features within the Olympic Village and other athletic sites. And we’re doing the same at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games this year,” the app said.
Grindr’s “show distance” feature will also be turned off by default, but users can share their approximate distance if they decide to turn it on. Grinders said its goal was to help athletes connect without worrying about unintentionally revealing their whereabouts or being recognized.

Convicted child rapist gets booed in beach volleyball, an update by Amit Kamath
Steven van de Velde, a convicted child rapist, was greeted by boos as he walked out to represent the Netherlands in a beach volleyball match that was held in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower on Sunday, reports The Guardian.
Anticipating the reception from other athletes and spectators, Van de Velde is not living in the Games Village and has repeatedly excused himself from media interactions in the mixed zone.
Van de Velde was convicted for raping a 12-year-old girl in 2016. He had been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to raping the British girl. The report added that he had flown to England to meet the girl in 2014 with full knowledge of her age, having met her on Facebook. Van de Velde served 12 months in a British prison, before being transferred to his home country where he was released after a further month.
His inclusion in the Dutch contingent had caused a lot of furore. Van de Velde and his partner Matthew Immers lost their first game on Sunday against an Italian pair

Olympics 2024 India Day 2 Live Updates: MANU BHAKER WINS BRONZE, 10m Air Pistol Women’s FINAL
A RECAP OF THE FINAL: Manu Bhaker was never out of reckoning in the 24-shot eight-woman final, her confidence surely boosted by her belief in the Bhagvad Gita and an above par 580 on Saturday, which gave her third place in qualifying.
The 22-year-old from Jhajhar was second after the first series of five-shots and third after the second. Once the two Chinese, reigning world champion Jiang Ranxin and Li Xue, were out in fifth and fourth respectively, it was increasing becoming a fight between the two Koreans Oh Ye Jin and Kim Yije and Manu for the medals.
A 10.0 for her 20th shot assured a medal as Vietnam’s Trinh bowed out of reckoning and Manu pushed for gold. She moved up to second after the 22nd after Yeji faltered with a 9.4. However, the Korean overturned the 0.1 deficit in the 22nd with a clutch 10.5 as the Indian bowed out with a 10.3.
Oh Ye Jin would go on to win gold with an Olympic record of 243.2 as Yeji was second with 241.3 and Manu third with 221.7.
“I am really happy that I am the medium for this first medal and I really hope we would be winning many more medals at this Olympics as all of us have worked hard,” said the champion shooter to the official broadcasters .

Olympics 2024 India Day 2 Live Updates: Archery – Women’s Team QF – NED 6-0 IND
That is a very forgettable quarterfinal from the Indian trio. One factor to consider is that because of the bye in the previous round, Netherlands had the advantage of being used to the finals venue before India were. But that is still, not much of an excuse for 6s and a 4. India were just not at it today, Bhajan was alright but Ankita and Deepika couldn’t hit the high notes. End of the team event hopes for Indian women.

Olympics 2024 India Day 2 Live Updates: KNOW MANU BHAKER
Born in Jhajjar, Haryana, a state known for its boxers and wrestlers, Manu Bhaker took to sports like tennis, skating and boxing in school. She also participated in a form of martial arts called ‘thang ta’, winning medals at the national level. She then impulsively decided to try her hand at shooting when she was just 14 – just after the 2016 Rio Olympics ended – and loved it.
At the 2017 National Shooting Championships, Manu Bhaker stunned Olympian and former world No. 1 Heena Sidhu where she won 9 gold medals. Manu shot a record score of 242.3 to erase Sidhu’s mark to win the 10m Air Pistol final. 2018 was Bhaker’s breakthrough year as a shooter as she became a teenage sensation bagging a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games just at the age of 16.
In the 2018 International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup held at Guadalajara, Mexico. Bhaker won the gold medal in the Women’s 10-metre air pistol, defeating Mexico’s Alejandra Zavala, a two-time champion.
Manu Bhaker also sealed an Olympics quota place with a fourth-place finish at the 2019 Munich ISSF World Cup. However, her debut at the Games did not go as planned. Shortly after Tokyo 2020, Manu Bhaker became the junior world champion in the women’s 10m air pistol at Lima and did win the women’s 25m pistol silver at the 2022 Cairo World Championships and a gold in the same event at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Olympics 2024 India Day 2 Live Updates: Swimming update
Dhinidhi Desinghu, 14 years old, competing in 200m freestyle topped a slow Heat 1 clocking 2:06.96 at the Paris La Defense Arena. It was on the third turn that she pushed for the lead, and her splits read 29.68, 32.07, 32.71 and 32.50 when she went at 1.72 m/s. Not her PB, but a good start to her Olympic career.
For context, Aussie Mollie O’Callaghan had the fastest timings in qualification with 1:55.79, her splits – 27.48, 29.74, 30.06 and 28.51. The iconic Ariarne Titmus logged 1:56.23 (27.19, 29.39, 30.14 and 29.51). Dhinidhi will have to slash close to 10 full seconds in coming years.
In the men’s 100m backstroke, Srihari Nataraj in Heat 2, clocked 55.01, finishing second in his race behind M Wilson on 54.49. He did well to move up from third to second with splits of 26.50 and 28.51.
The gulf in standards and enormity of improvement required can be gauged from the fact that only 1 other swimmer out of four faster heats (that’s 1 of 32 swimmers) finished slower than him. The entire fleet of 3 heats was faster than him.
Both Srihari and Dhinidhi didn’t progress from their heats.

Want to read about the Manu Bhaker transformation from nearly quitting the sport to reaching the podium in Paris? This lead intro from Mihir Vasavda yesterday should hook you in.
Her moment of epiphany came at the most unlikely of places – a beachside resort in Cherai, Kerala. On a vacation to recover from the Tokyo Olympics shock, Manu Bhaker was in her room all by herself while her family was out sightseeing. “Suddenly, I found myself standing in front of a blank, white wall holding a kettle filled with water,” Manu laughs. It’s what shooters call holding practice – to test the stability and strength of their arm. “That was the time when I was like, ‘I am getting restless, I really need to get back’.” For 25 days until that moment, Manu hadn’t even looked at her pistol. Shocked and shaken by her debut Olympics, where she couldn’t make a single final – “one of the very sour memories of my life,” she says – Manu was convinced she was ‘done’. But when she felt desperation, holding a kettle brimming with water was the sign, she took the first flight back to Delhi and was back at the range.

China has both gold medals in shooting so far. But the two Koreans and Manu, who form the top three (in that order) after two series, could stop them from completing a hat-trick. First elimination round and Manu has scored more than any other shooter. Stays steady at third, closing in on the leader and 1.1 ahead of the Vietnamese. (Mihir)

Olympics 2024 India Day 2 Live Updates: Rowing, Men’s Single Sculls Repechages
Here’s Amit Kamath with a Rowing 101 for you
After Balraj Panwar reached the quarter-finals of the rowing event, here’s a quick sporting guide.
Within rowing are two disciplines – sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling each rower uses two separate oars, one on either side of the boat, while sweep rowers use a single oar each. Competition is divided into classes that can be based on weight, and the number of rowers in a boat, featuring one, two, four or eight, with some crews also featuring a coxswain that steers among other duties. Compared to sweep oars, sculling oars are shorter and have a smaller blade as rowers are able to use two at a time. Oars are attached to the boat with riggers which help provide leverage for the rowing motion.
Have you ever wondered what a rowing boat is made out of?
Racing boats in rowing have evolved over time with advances in material and technology, and in the modern day are typically made from lightweight carbon fibre. They are long, narrow and lightweight to foster greater speed on the water, although rules govern the minimum weight for the boat in each class to maintain competitiveness.

Olympics 2024 India Day 2 Live Updates: Rowing, Men’s Single Sculls Repechages
Balraj Panwar sneaks into the quarterfinals finishing second in repechage with 7:12.41. He led for the first 1000 metres, lost the lead subsequently to Monaco’s Quentin Antonognelli and kicked off his sprint with 220 metres to go. The European though had his own final kick, and put in the heavy power stroke to finish at 7:10. Panwar’s biggest strength is his pacing across the four 500m splits, he doesn’t fade away at 1500m as happens with Indians at big events. That last sprint was encouraging, but he couldn’t hold the Monaco sculler back. He will need a sustained last dozen power-strokes to make further progress than three previous Indian rowers who made quarters. He is known to have the start of Dattu Bhokanal and smooth stroke of Swarn Virk. He will also need the finishing smarts of Bajrang Takhar, the previous Asiad champion, and his tactical coach.

Meanwhile, Elavenil since that poor 9.9 — 10.6, 10.6, 10.8, 10.5 and 10.7, 10.6, 10.4 and a 10.7. That’s some elite mentality over there! Balraj Panwar is through to the quarterfinals. He gave it a really good go in this race to win it, but just matters who comes in the top two and he had done enough. A timing of 7:12.41 for him and a “Qualified to QF” next to his name. The QF races are day after.

Ramita finishes her fourth series with a 105.3. Quite a decent fourth for her with a series of four shots where she landed 10.6, two 10.7s and then a 10.9. She’s currently 9th on the standings and has hit at least one 10.9 in every series of hers until now.

Oh wow. What’s happening here? A 9.9 from Ela for her 32nd shot. That’s quite poor. She’s not been feeling like her first two series’ since the start of the third and that’s something she’ll have to address now. For those of you wondering how long is the qualification, it’s a one hour and 15 minute long format for a total of 60 shots each. Some shooters shoot fast like sixth placed Korean Jihyeon Keum, who is almost at the end of her fourth series or some take their time like Poland’s Julia Piotrowska, who is almost midway of her third series.

Elavenil’s worst shot of the match is her 26th. A lowly 10.0. She follows that up with a 10.3 and then we’re back to the regular schedule of a 10.6. She then finishes off her third series with a 10.4 and a 10.3 and ends on 104.4 points. After a 105.8 and a 106.1, Ela scores her worst series yet. But still in fourth spot.

Olympics 2024 India Day 2 Live Updates: ROWING, Men’s Single Sculls Repechages
Ramita looked like she was having herself a decent third series. But it’s once again her lack of consistency here that’s pulling her slightly away from the top 8. Three 10.2s and a 10.3 in the third series — those shots are the killers in qualification and currently the Indian either shoots a really high-scoring shot, or one that negates her previous good shot. Her third series ends on 104.9 and she’s currently 11th.

Right, Elavenil seems to be in really good touch today. A 106.1 in the second series with four shots of 10.6 in a row to close it out. The lowest shot — a 10.4. In a qualification, 10.9s are really not the target. Keeping your bad shots above 10.3, hitting those high 10.6s — that’s the kind of shooting that lands you in the final.

This is turning out to be a decent series from Ramita. Only that first shot is 10.3 and the rest of them have been consistently good. PV Sindhu’s quick assessment of court conditions are rather underrated. She’ll log a few errors, but once she finds her lengths, she can reel off points quickly. Against Fathimath Abdul Razzaq of Maldives, the 10th seeded Indian was 4-4, before going on a 10 point spree thereafter. An easy opener and group stage for her in the draw, but it will be important to gauge line judgements especially on the back line. She looks sharp on the net. But early glimpse of where opponents will catch Sindhu in that rare point Fathimath picked – hurrying Sindhu on the forehand corner lunge, where drops get rained down. 21-9 for first set.
