Neeraj Chopra Diamond League Final 2024 Highlights: A solid finish to the season for Neeraj Chopra as he came up just a centimeter short of Peters’ winning throw.

Neeraj Chopra Diamond League Final 2024 Live: India’s javelin star Neeraj Chopra will return to action on Saturday in Brussels.

Neeraj Chopra, Brussels DL, Diamond League Final Highlights Neeraj Chopra came mighty close but finished second at the Diamond League Final title by a mere centimeter, with a throw of 87.86 meters. Chopra, who had clinched the DL trophy in 2022, achieved his best throw of the day in his third attempt but was outdone by Anderson Peters’ 87.87-meter effort. Peters, a two-time world champion from Grenada, delivered his best throw in his opening attempt. Julian Weber of Germany secured third place with a throw of 85.97 meters.

Neeraj finished 2nd in the Diamond League final for the second year in a row, having won the trophy in 2022’s season finale.

The Indian superstar hadn’t been at the peak of his powers this season as he competed at the Paris Olympics and the Diamond League meet in Lausanne in August while continuing to grapple with a long-standing groin issue. But despite that, he had registered three 89+ throws in the space of one month. While he finished second in both those events on the back of one outstanding throw each, Neeraj couldn’t find that one big throw past 89 to finish to the season. But all said and done, it was another fine year for Neeraj, who extended his streak of finishing in the top two.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Neeraj finishes 2nd

This is how Neeraj Chopra’s 2024 panned out in the four main events he took part in:

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Neeraj finishes 2nd

Germany’s Julian Weber gives an insight into conditions: I had so much fun tonight. I’m pretty tired, but to end the season with a 3rd place in the Diamond League final and 85m97 is really good. It was rather cold tonight and in the warming up area there was no track, only grass. When we come to the stadium, the track is rather hard and the difference is big, so that made it a little difficult for us javelin throwers: But as I said, I am really happy to end the season this way. The main thing is that I stayed healthy during the season and after the break I can start working to do even better next season.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

Almost all the athletes have been speaking about being tired / exhausted in Brussels over the last 2 days. A testing (and successful) season comes to an end for Neeraj.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

Nice to see Neeraj with a smile at the end of what has been a tough season for him. The results have one again been very impressive but he has been carrying a load of sorts. Hopefully now he can get some rest, recover, and attend to what his body is going through.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

NEERAJ CHOPRA FINISHES 2ND: 87.86 is Neeraj’s best throw of the night, and Peters matches it with his final attempt. Just 0.01 the difference between Peters and Neeraj overall! What a close finish to the season. Hugs and smiles all around eventually.

00:52 (IST)15 Sep 2024

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

Neeraj Chopra falls over to the left again but this time gets back and has his arm up in the air!

But it is more in hope than anything… it is a very decent 86.46 from Neeraj to close his season and that means he finishes 2nd.

Peters has a last throw left to try and put some distance between him and Neeraj but he is the champion tonight.

00:50 (IST)15 Sep 2024

Rhythmic clapping… getting the crowd going… and Julian Weber’s last attempt is… sub-80

He acknowledges the crowd. End of a tiring season, and one of missed opportunities for him again.

Neeraj in the top two, confirmed.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

Wasn’t really under any threat tonight but the incredible streak of Neeraj Chopra finishing in the top three in every event since 2018 continues. 9th September 2018, Ostrava was the last time that happened.

Right then, time for Weber. Last attempt.

00:44 (IST)15 Sep 2024

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

Niether Neeraj nor Peters improve their best marks of the night and so heading into the final throw of the night, we still are looking at a 0.01 difference.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

Neeraj falls over again, and that is now a sign that he is not getting his block right. Second straight attempt that has happened. AS he turns and walks back he does the “blocking” part in gesture, perhaps a sign that is where he is facing an issue. A word with Dr. Klaus. One attempt to go in the night and season for him.

00:39 (IST)15 Sep 2024

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

Julian Weber has to reset his 5th attempt. All the way down to the runup and then back. It is getting down to the last few seconds… and it is a sub-80 throw. So he steps past the foul line anyway.

Neeraj next.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

NEeraj falls over to his left side for the first time today, and that felt like a genuine slip after the blocking didn’t quite happen right. Not a great throw and he looks at his arms with concern. Peters will now go for his 4th attempt… can he put some cushion between him and Neeraj?

00:31 (IST)15 Sep 2024

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

Neeraj will go 6th now of course, since the order changes.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

Top three, surprise surprise, still remains unchanged. Weber now, asking the crowd to egg him on… and his fourth attempt is… still sub-85. He is stuck in that band since his first throw. 81.46m.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

And yes, that is YET ANOTHER THROW farther than Neeraj’s Tokyo gold medal winning mark, which hasn’t been in his top 10 for a while now. Just goes to show how things have steadily improved for him since the Olympics in 2021.

00:25 (IST)15 Sep 2024

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

BIG ONE FROM NEERAJ… 87.86m! OH WOW! 87.86m from Neeraj Chopra! Just 0.01 behind Anderson Peters’ 87.87m earlier in the night. Neeraj stays 2nd but the margin couldn’t be smaller!

00:21 (IST)15 Sep 2024

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

Weber a bit more downbeat after his third throw. Not an improvement for the German from his first throw. 82.15 for him.

Peters remains the man to beat… and perhaps Neeraj the main threat to the Grenadan. 85.40 for Peters with his 3rd throw.

Neeraj to come next.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

Once again, the top three remain undisturbed. Weber getting ready for his 3rd attempt now. Can he wedge himself into the top 2?

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

No one really went big with their 2nd attempts apart from Anderson Peters’ 86.96m.

Third attempts are underway now.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

83.49m is Neeraj’s 2nd attempt. It was an immediate reaction of dissatisfaction from the Indian as he knew the release perhaps didn’t quite feel right. Seemed to slightly overbalance to his left. 2nd attempts are done now.

00:10 (IST)15 Sep 2024

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

Julian Weber’s 2nd attempt is not an improvement… he started to celebrate but just stopped himself short. It’s 82.61 for the German.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Men’s Javelin Throw

NEERAJ WITH A SOLID START: 86.82m from the Indian. No falling over, no major reactions. Just a really solid first throw that puts him 2nd behind Anderson Peters’ 87.87m.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Lausanne recap

Neeraj Chopra is no stranger to firsts. But on Thursday night in Lausanne, it was a strange sort of first for him. He was competing at an event for the first time as the *former* Olympic champion. Just two weeks after he was pipped to the title by Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, Neeraj was back at work. He wasn’t pleased with his efforts at the Stade de France, but since he hadn’t exacerbated the groin niggle that has followed him along for a few years now, he decided to enter the Diamond League meet.

The feeling of newness didn’t end there. Once the men’s javelin event at the Athletissima got underway, Neeraj was near unchartered territory once again. This time, it was to keep up his run of top-three finishes that extends back to September 2018 in Ostrava. Not since that day, has Neeraj finished fourth or lower in any international event.

With his sixth and final attempt, however, Neeraj found that one big effort as he came up with yet another Season Best throw, and finished second on the night with the mark of 89.49m, behind only Anderson Peters’ sensational 90.61m. That’s now thrice this month alone that Neeraj has managed to register a new lifetime second-best throw. It was 89.34m at Paris in qualification, then 89.45 at the Olympics final, and he pushed that up by 4cms in Lausanne. All behind only that 89.94m that stays atop his list, for now.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: What was on said on Friday night

Miltiadis Tentoglou, Long Jump (3rd): I wasn’t feeling my legs today and the cold is not for me. It’s impressive that Tajay Gayle was able to jump that far in these conditions, so I’m not mad that I lost from him.

Armand Duplantis, Pole Vault (winner): My legs felt terrible tonight and I’m just really tired. It’s been a crazy couple of weeks: the race against Karsten and then I had to jump the day after. That took a lot more from my body than I expected. With 6m11 I got a good result, but the world record wasn’t meant to be tonight. It’s not easy to do better each time. Everything needs to come together. I had some good jumps tonight and I’m really happy about that. Now it’s time to celebrate my beautiful season: I will drink some good Belgian beers tonight for sure.

Mykolas Alekna, Discus Throw: It was a really nice competition, maybe a little bit too cold.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh, High Jump (winner): Finally the season is over, I’m exhausted.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: QUICK GUIDE – What is the Diamond League?

The Diamond League is a season-long athletics event, with men and women competing in 16 of track & field’s primary disciplines throughout the year (but not every discipline is featured in every meet). Athletes compete for points at 14 series meetings (where applicable) from April to September and try to qualify for the Wanda Diamond League Final.

The season finale is being held in Brussels this year.

At each meet where their event is featured, athletes are awarded 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1 points for ranking 1st to 8th respectively. The top six in the field events, top eight for 100m-800m and the top ten for 1500m and long distance events will qualify for the Final. (Neeraj competed in two Diamond League meets during the season, finishing 2nd in Doha and Lausanne, while skipping Paris and Zurich. He had enough points to qualify for the final from those two meets).

Over yesterday and today, Diamond League Champions will be crowned at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme in Brussels. Each champion wins the “Diamond Trophy”, and USD 30’000 prize money along with a wild card for the World Athletics Championships next year in Tokyo.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Two years back

Back in September 2022, Neeraj Chopra won the Diamond Trophy (the lovely trophy that winners of Diamond League Final get) and said afterwards in Zurich that he finally truly felt like a big part of global athletics. Tokyo happened in front of empty stands, and while Neeraj was already no stranger to winning, to see himself as one of the centers of attraction at a proper global athletics-only event, it felt special. It was also special for another reason.

Another first for Neeraj tonight: competing with his family in the stands. Uncle Surender (who made him take up sport) in Zurich tonight along with Jai Chaudhary (who introduced him to javelin and is currently Rohit Yadav and Sahil Silwal’s coach) and Harender (childhood friend) pic.twitter.com/a7AL2i4XNt

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: On Friday…

Avinash Sable finished 9th:

National record holder 3000m steeplechaser Avinash Sable finished ninth in the season-ending Diamond League final on Friday night, Day 1 of events. Sable, who turned 30 on Friday, clocked 8 minute and 17.09 seconds to finish ninth in the 10-man field in his debut DL final.
Amos Serem of Kenya emerged as the Diamond League champion with a time of 8:06.90, while reigning Olympic and world champion Soufiane El Bakkali (8:08.60) of Morocco was second in the season-ending finale.
Mohamed Amin Jhinaoui of Tunisia was third with 8:09.68.
World champion and Paris Olympics silver medallist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will be in action on Saturday.
Sable had finished 11th in the Paris Olympic Games with a time of 8:14.18.
He had finished 14th in the overall Diamond League standings with three points from two meetings. But four athletes ranked higher than him — Lamecha Girma (injured) of Ethiopia, Geordie Beamish of New Zealand, Ryuji Mura of Japan and Hillary Bor of the USA — pulled out, allowing him to sneak inside the top 10 cut-off.

Neeraj Chopra Live Updates, Diamond League Final 2024: Hello!

It’s been quite the eventful season (even if not in the strictest sense of the word) for Neeraj Chopra. He has had to come to terms with the fact that his body is not a well-oiled machine that can keep winning titles everywhere he goes. And yet, he has kept up a remarkable run of never finishing outside the top three at any event in a long, long time. (Since 2018, for the record).

Tonight, he will be back in action one last time in 2024, looking to end the season on a high and get some much needed rest and repair work done on his bruised body.

Here’s how the Diamond League regular season panned out:

Ishaan Marwaha is talking about a sporting intangible that cannot be measured but only felt: Rhythm. It’s in his head and something he can feel from his vantage point right behind the thrower’s arm. But a hard one for him to articulate.

So, when the millions watch in awe as Neeraj Chopra tumbles to the floor and rises with a roar, Marwaha is obsessed with the minutiae.

“I am just watching him how he is warming up,” he says. “Or the technique. How is the leg work? If he is running fast because when he is running slow, we can feel it from outside, there is something wrong.
