India vs New Zealand Live Score, 2nd Test Day 2: Washington Sundar gives a glimpse of the future
India vs New Zealand Live Score, 2nd Test Day 2: He may have played just four Tests before this one but Washington Sundar put in the kind of performances that Indian fans won’t be able to forget any time soon. Moreover, most of those unforgettable performances were with the bat, with the 25-year-old forming an integral part of India’s stunning victory over Australia in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In the last Test he played all the way back in March 2021, Washington was stranded on 96 off 174 as he ran out of partners. Now, he has shown just how far he has come as a red-ball spinner in the years between his last Test appearance and this one.
Ravi Shastri had said on ESPNCricinfo in May 2022 when Washington was still in selection wilderness that he is set to be India’s premier all-rounder across formats whenever Ravindra Jadeja’s playing career ends. It looks like his time has come now.

India vs New Zealand Live Score, 2nd Test Day 2: NZ eyeing the impossible
India vs New Zealand Live Score, 2nd Test Day 2: Better New Zealand teams have toured India in the past but one would struggle to find a side that is doing as well as this one is at the moment. They did something the Kiwis haven’t done for over three decades. Now they have followed that up by having a very good Day 1, so much so that it is quite debatable if they really lost that day despite their collapse either side of Tea. No team has managed to win a series in India since 2012 and no New Zealand has ever won a series here at all. Surely, surely that is not going to change now, right in the middle of a period in which India have been more dominant at home than ever before.

India vs New Zealand Live Score, 2nd Test Day 2: An Ashwin-Washington first for India
India vs New Zealand Live Score, 2nd Test Day 2: Ashwin took the first three wickets yesterday and Washington accounted for the rest. This makes it the first time that two right-arm off spinners bowling for India have accounted for all 10 wickets in a Test innings.

India vs New Zealand Live Score, 2nd Test Day 2: India’s tryst with 7/59s
India vs New Zealand Live Score, 2nd Test Day 2: Washington Sundar’s figures read 7/59 yesterday. That makes this the fourth consecutive decade in which an Indian bowler has managed exactly these figures in a Test innings. Ravichandran Ashwin had returned 7/59 against New Zealand in the second innings in Indore in 2016 (2010s), Irfan Pathan took 7/59 in the first innings against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2005 (2000s) and Anil Kumble took the same figures in the second innings against Sri Lanka in Lucknow in 1994 (1990s). Just to add spice to that coincidence, India’s highest ever Test total is… wait for it…. 759!

India vs New Zealand Live Score, 2nd Test Day 2: No water, no roof for fans in Pune
India vs New Zealand Live Score, 2nd Test Day 2: Now the players had to be out there in the sweltering heat and their pain could be felt by most of the fans as they had no protection from the sunshine either. But unlike the players, the fans had no access to drinking water. It wasn’t a very nice day out for them yesterday and you can’t possibly expect packed stadiums for Test matches if you provide conditions like these.

India vs New Zealand Live Score, 2nd Test Day 2: Washington Sundar’s star turn
India vs New Zealand Live Score, 2nd Test Day 2: There were questions over whether it was the right call to include Washington Sundar over Kuldeep Yadav. The former is a far better batter but questions were over whether he is better as a wicket-taking option, he only had six wickets in his four Tests before this with an average close to 45. Well, he went ahead and took more wickets yesterday than in his entire Test career, returning utterly astonishing figures of 7/59. His carnage started towards the end of the second session and it continued in the third. Ashwin took the first three Kiwi wickets, Sundar accounted for the rest.

India vs New Zealand Live Score, 2nd Test Day 2: A good start for New Zealand with the ball
India vs New Zealand Live Score, 2nd Test Day 2: India’s captain Rohit Sharma fell for a nine-ball duck after coming across just the most unplayable delivery from Tim Southee. It was the second consecutive time that Rohit fell to Southee in the first innings of a Test match. India then prioritised ensuring no other wickets fell which meant that they scored just 16 runs in 11 overs at a run rate of 1.45. New Zealand were clearly in control at Stumps and this is what India would be striving to gain back early on Day 2.
