Microsoft opened pre-orders for Surface Laptop Ultra and Surface RTX Spark Dev Box on October 7, moving its high-performance Surface announcements into a concrete ordering timetable. The update follows its earlier device preview and a Windows presentation focused on running AI across local hardware and cloud services.
Key points
- Microsoft opened pre-orders for Surface Laptop Ultra and Surface RTX Spark Dev Box on October 7.
- Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599 MSRP, with availability announced from October 16.
- Microsoft says the $5,999 Dev Box is available to pre-order in the United States and begins shipping in November.
What changed
The new development is the ordering and delivery schedule, rather than an independent verdict on performance. Laptop Ultra uses NVIDIA RTX Spark, while the Dev Box packages the platform into a compact desktop for developers. Microsoft describes both as hardware for demanding creative and AI workloads. The announced dollar amounts are manufacturer prices; this report does not establish an Indian retail price or local availability.
Context: the hardware and Windows roadmap
Microsoft first described Laptop Ultra in May, highlighting a Blackwell RTX GPU, support for up to 128GB of unified memory and CUDA. It also outlined a 15-inch touchscreen and connections including HDMI, USB-C, USB-A and an SD card reader. Those details were manufacturer specifications for a pre-release product, with configuration and market qualifications.
Its separate October 7 Windows announcement describes “hybrid intelligence”: choosing local or cloud models for different tasks. Microsoft says new Copilot capabilities using local context, actions and models will begin rolling out on Copilot+ PCs in coming months. Some developer features arrive as previews, so the hardware order date should not be read as universal software availability.
Why it matters
For readers tracking AI PCs, the useful distinction is between a product announcement, a preorder and a feature rollout. They answer different questions. Announced specifications explain the design; dated availability explains the next commercial step. Neither substitutes for independent testing of sustained speed, battery life or application compatibility. We have not tested these devices and do not endorse a purchase.
